Richmond’s Irish rookie John Heslin has returned home to Ireland indefinitely, the club has announced.

The 19-year-old from Westmeath was selected by the Tigers with pick 90 in the 2011 Rookie Draft.

Heslin completed a trial with Essendon in 2010 and was also talking to the Bombers about a possible code switch when the Tigers came knocking on his door.

Recruitment manager Francis Jackson and recruiting officer Matthew Clarke contacted Heslin just a day after watching him play in the Sigerson cup for UCD to arrange a meeting with his family.

“It’s never easy for young players to relocate to a new country, a long away from their family and friends.  John found that transition difficult, and has experienced homesickness,” general manager of football Craig Cameron said.

“We have worked hard to support John and will continue to do so but understand his decision to return home at this time.”
