Sydney’s Multicultural Community Services will hold a special migrant and refugee employment expo in Randwick next month.
The event is aimed primarily at long term resident migrants in Australia, however organisers have stressed that all job-seekers are welcome to attend.
Irish migrants looking for work, new career pathways or advice on applying for jobs will all go home with valuable information and contacts in the industry.
Those who are unemployed but looking for work will also learn about financial support networks available from the government and other voluntary organisations, as well as apprenticeships and traineeship options.
Facilities will also be available for those with overseas skills or qualifications, who wish to find out more about putting their knowledge into practice in Australia.
Organiser Vishal Sonule, a Community Development Project Officer, spoke to the Irish Echo ahead of the expo, explaining that he and fellow volunteers have already had a strong response from migrants in the community.
“Ideally speaking it’s a jobs expo giving information about employment pathways, basically how to secure employment,” he explained.
“In that regard there will be different organisations present to give advice.
“Primarily it’s for refugees and migrants, migrants meaning those that are permanent residents in Australia.
“We also welcome those on holiday visas, they can get help too because they are different representations as well. “Mainly it depends on the employer and who they want to employ,” he continued.
Mr Sonule was keen to clarify that there won’t be many employers in attendance on the day however.
According to the event organiser : “It’s not a job fair. There won’t be many employers with jobs available in the eastern suburbs there that day, so we want to make sure we don’t give the wrong information.
“If there are new migrants there who are interested in doing training or starting apprenticeships that information will be there. “We expect there will be a large turnout,” he added.
Any organisation that wishes to run a stall on the day can contact Vishal at vishals@sydneymcs.org.au.
The event will take place on May 22 from 10am to 2pm at the Auditorium, Level 2, Randwick TAFE, King Street, Randwick 2031.
