Two Irish backpackers are due to appear in Proserpine magistrates court today, over damage to a hostel.
Queensland police allege that the two 19-year-old men damaged property in a hostel kitchen, before fleeing the scene on foot.
The incident allegedly occurred at Main Street Backpackers in Proserpine, a rural town on the Whitsundays coast.
Police believe the men were staying at the hostel when the alleged incident occurred.
Police allege that the two men ‘smashed’ and damaged some property in the kitchen area of the hostel, after midnight on June 8.
The young men then left the scene on foot.
Police attended the scene shortly after the incident and quickly located the men, who were found walking around the corner onto Main Street in Proserpine.
The men were arrested and subsequently charged with one count of wilful damage to the property.
The owner of Main Street Backpackers earlier told the Irish Echo that he would no longer accept Irish guests at the hostel.
