Two Irish backpackers were yesterday fined and ordered to pay restitution to the owner of a hostel they had damaged early last month.
Queensland police had alleged that the two 19-year-old men damaged property in the hostel’s kitchen, before fleeing the scene on foot, after midnight on June 8.
Police believe the 19-year-olds were staying at the hostel when the alleged incident occurred.
Police attended the scene shortly after the incident and quickly located the men, who were found walking around the corner onto Main Street in Proserpine.
The men were arrested and subsequently charged with a count each of wilful damage to the property.
The two 19-year-olds appeared before Proserpine magistrates court yesterday, where they were both fined $90 and ordered to pay $410 to the owner of Main Street Backpackers, on the Whitsundays coast.
Magistrate AG Kennedy entered no conviction against their names.
Thomas Dunne, the owner of Main Street Backpackers, told the Irish Echo last week that he would no longer accept Irish guests at the hostel.
