Irish duo selected for Magpies

Collingwood's Caolan Mooney

Caolan Mooney has retained his spot for the Collingwood Magpies after an impressive off-the-bench performance last week.

Fellow Down-man Marty Clarke has also been recalled to the team following last weekend’s defeat at the hands of Hawthorn.

Mooney was a late call-up for the Pies last week and was named as substitute.

He came on in the fourth quarter and accumulated six possessions in his cameo performance. Coach Nathan Buckley has rewarded him with his third AFL cap this week while fellow county-man Marty Clarke will start on the bench against the GWS Giants.

Mooney and Clarke join another trio of Irish players in action this weekend.

Antrim-man Niall McKeever has been named on an extended bench for the Brisbane Lions clash against the West Coast Eagles in Perth. Pearce Hanley plays his 51st match for the Lions. The Lions will need to upset teh Eagles to keep their finals hopes alive.

Zach Tuohy has recovered from his back injury and will play for Carlton against Richmond on Saturday.

The Laois-man plays his 26th match for the Blues, who need to defeat Richmond to have any hope of making the finals.

No such luck for Tommy Walsh who continues to languish in the reserves for the Sydney Swans.

Sydney are on top of the table having won seven games in a row and are at unbackable odds to make it eight against the struggling Gold Coast Suns.
