Sharp rise in Irish 457 visa grants

The number of Irish workers being sponsored by Australian companies rose in 2011. Figures released by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) show that Irish citizens were granted 3,100 primary 457 visas up to December 31 last year.

A Sydney District Court has awarded a Tyrone man over $350,000 in damages for injuries he sustained in an unprovoked attack outside a pub in December 2008. Patrick Crilly, 25, sued The Bumble Group, who employed a security guard working at the Moore View Park Hotel in Waterloo.

Sydney Irish businessman laid to rest

Well-known Irish businessman Mick Daly was laid to rest yesterday at Castle Hill Cemetery in north-west Sydney. Hundreds of friends, relatives, work mates and members of the Irish community packed into St Bernadette’s Catholic Church for the funeral mass. Concelebrant Fr Tom Devereux, Sydney’s Irish community chaplain, said that it was one of the largest gatherings of mourners he had seen.

It’s official: new citizens mark Australia Day

When Mark Molumby’s travels took him to Australia for a year in 2005, the Laois man never for a second thought that he would one day become an Australian citizen. Now seven years on and Mr Molumby was one of 28 proud people of various nationalities who were awarded citizenship at the Onslow Oval in Camden on Australia Day. As is the story for many Irish expats, finding the love of his life in Australia is the main reason Mr Molumby decided to leave the Emerald Isle for sunnier pastures.

An Irish nursing home owner who was accused of abandoning residents and stealing money from clients has been managing an old people’s home in Melbourne. Miriam Holmes, who is accused of “reckless abandonment” of residents in her care at the Avondale nursing home in Kilkenny has until recently been managing the Plumpton Villa facility in Glenroy.

Appeal to help shooting victim

A trust that was set up to help a man with Australian and Irish citizenship who was violently gunned down in Honduras last year is appealing for donations to help with his rising medical expenses. Joe O’Donnell, a diving instructor, had been living on Roatan Island when he was shot in the spine after a dispute with a local resident and the resident’s wife.
