Model leader, Wexford captain Ursula Jacob led from the front to drive her side to retain the All-Ireland Senior Camogie Championship title against Galway at Croke Park.
Galway scrapped hard after trailing the contest in the early stages and managed to secure a deserved three-point lead after Orla Kilkenny’s 51st minute point.
Tara Rutledge had a clear shot for a point to give them a vital cushion shortly afterwards, but the sliotar careered off the upright to safety.
With their luck holding on this occasion, Wexford left little else to chance. The Model women immeditaely worked the ball up the field and Jacob skilfully caught Josie Dwyer’s high ball before smashing a shot to the roof of the Galway net, levelling the scores with seven minutes remaining.
Kate Kelly then brilliantly scooped possession for the Models in front of the posts and when she was fouled, Jacob made no mistake from the placed ball.
And it was the same combination that produced the last score in the second minute of extra time, Kelly carrying strongly before hand-passing inside to Jacob, who lofted over from under the Hogan Stand.
Although Galway pushed to snatch a dramatic late goal, they were condemned to a fifth All-Ireland defeat since winning their only title back in 1996, as Wexford’s women showed their pedigree to secure a second successive O’Duffy Cup.
:: Under-age Hurling – A Tribe Called Best
Galway’s star potential shone bright at Semple Stadium, where the Westerners claimed another under-age hurling title.
The Tribesmen won their tenth All-Ireland U21 hurling title with a 10-point win over Dublin in Thurles.
For the second time in a week, the the Tribesmen inflicted All-Ireland final heartbreak on the Dubs, having beaten them in the minor decider at Croke Park the previous Sunday.
The Connacht men took full control from the moment Tadhg Haran fired home the first of their three first half goals from a penalty.
Although the young Dubs battled bravely from start to finish, they were always playing catch-up and lacked the ruthlessness in front of goal that set their opponents apart.
:: Kerry’s final injury worries
Kerry’s Eoin Brosnan has injured his ankle at a training session in Killarney, while team-mate Seamus Scanlon has undergone surgery, making both players doubts for the All-Ireland SFC final this weekend.
Brosnan is receiving cryotherapy treatment and further examination in order to ascertain the full extent of the injury, which is not yet known.
Scanlon is also a doubt for the final against Dublin due to a benign cyst on his neck. Scanlon has had the cyst treated in Limerick and has been rated as very unlikely to feature in the final as a result.
