Ireland’s Jedward among favourites for Eurovision

Jedward do their thing at the Eurovision at Baku, Azerbaijan.

The duo who will represent Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest in Azerbaijan told the BBC of their excitement in representing their country for the second time in the competition.

Jedward successfully made it through their semi-final

John said: “I think it’s amazing to think we started in the UK on X Factor and now three years later we’re here doing Eurovision for a second year in a row.

“I think we’re really excited because I think we’ve brought a whole brand new audience back to Eurovision. I feel like we’ve made Eurovision an amazing competition to watch on TV.”

His twin brother Edward added: “I think me and John, we brought back that excitement to Eurovision. Before Eurovision was something that was in the background, in the distance, that some people would watch, but now it’s like a really mainstream name.”

SBS will screen delayed coverage of the Eurovision Song Contest final on Sunday evening from 7.30pm.

Jedward support anti-bullying campaign

Jedward have joined other celebrities for the ISPCC campaign against bullying.

Jedward, X-Factor judge Louis Walsh and Westlife star Mark Feehily have all posed as assault victims in a hard-hitting campaign against bullying.

The pop stars appear bruised and battered in the posters launched by children’s campaigners.

MTV presenter Laura Whitmore and actress Saoirse Ronan have also been photographed as part of the series of images launched in Dublin today by the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (ISPCC).

Westlife singer Feehily, who came up with the idea, said he was inspired by his own personal experiences of bullying when he was younger.

“I know at first hand how the impact of being bullied as a teenager can quite literally last a lifetime and I thought that if we could involve well-known ISPCC ambassadors perhaps people will think twice about bullying or indeed allowing bullying to happen,” he said.

All those who took part in the campaign gave their services for free, including the celebrities, photographer Barry McCall, make-up artist Tom McInerney and several advertising agencies.

“Everyone involved believes strongly that the message that emanates from each shot is a simple one,” said Feehily.

“Bullying and abuse, whether verbal, physical or emotional, is unacceptable in today’s society.”

The ISPCC warned bullying can have a devastating impact on the self-esteem, mental health and sense of belonging of children.

Last year Ireland’s Childline service received around 2,300 calls and messages everyday from young people, with almost a quarter of these contacts relating to abuse and welfare, including bullying and issues around mental health.

ISPCC chief executive Ashley Balbirnie said: “We are very grateful to Mark Feehily and our ambassadors for their support in raising awareness of this important issue.”

Jedward avoided ‘nul point’ but finished eighth in the weekend’s Eurovision final.

The pair arrived at Dublin airport to a warm welcome yesterday.

It was Azerbaijan’s Ell and Nikki who won the Europe-wide song contest with their catchy pop anthem, Running Scared.

It received 221 votes and three awards of 12 points from Malta, Russia and Turkey.

Jedward’s song, Lipstick, has topped a number of iTunes charts.

Ireland has now gone 15 years without winning the contest but the loss also means the country avoids footing the multi-million euro cost of staging next year’s event.

Around 5oo fans greeted the Lucan-born twins at Dublin airport yesterday.

You can watch the brothers’ high-energy Final performance here.
